Super Bowl LVIII Matchup: Do Purdy and the 49ers stand a chance against Kansas City?

Coming hot off an NFC championship win, Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers will face-off against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LVIII. While the 49ers are favored to win over the Chiefs at -128, via CBS Sports, Patrick Mahomes has a 75% success rate on his underdog games this season (read more on this at ESPN). Does Purdy have a real shot at football’s highest honor against one of the best QBs in NFL history? Short answer; no, not in my opinion. Long answer– well, let’s talk about it.

To say that Brock Purdy is an untalented quarterback would, of course, be a gross misrepresentation of what this player has accomplished this season. But a good QB is never exempt from criticism, especially as the play caller and leader of a team headed to a Super Bowl. When looking at the San Francisco 49ers, Brock Purdy just doesn’t stand out as the star of that team, especially alongside some of the best defensive players in the League.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: a good offense scores points, but a good defense wins games. The San Francisco 49ers are a prime example of this, as we saw them close a 17-point gap against the Detroit Lions in the NFC championship. But when it comes to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, a strong defense just might not be enough.

With the Chiefs, you have MVP caliber players playing on both sides of the ball, but there is no Chiefs Super Bowl without Patrick Mahomes. He is essential to their success and strength as a team. Can you really say the same about Brock Purdy as a quarterback? I would argue that you can’t. With Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Brandon Aiyuk and other stars, Brock Purdy doesn’t impress as an indispensable, crucial play maker– which are qualities absolutely necessary to have if the 49ers are to come out on top against the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes.

I don’t want to discount anything Brock Purdy has accomplished this season. He has now brought his team to the playoffs twice in his first two years as a pro, and he’s just getting started. With a whole career ahead of him, Brock Purdy has much to be proud of already.

Will this young QB step up to the plate and take down Mahomes, putting an end to what seems to be an incoming Chiefs dynasty? Only time will tell… February 11th can’t come soon enough!

  1. Great article! You make some great points about Purdy. I’ve always been a big fan of his but he’s nowhere near the star status of players like Mahomes, who can single-handedly win games against opponents. But I will still pick Purdy to come out on top this year!
